The Faceless

General Info

What they basically are
Say hello to a race as old as the Earth, or so they claim to be. The faceless are a race that is neither completely dead or living, demon or human, good nor evil. Most prefer simply to watch other races fight and survive but some, most of whom are outcasts from their society, have chosen a different path. They choose to interfere without regards to consequences, they only live for what they want. That would be most of them, any way.
These creatures would most be mistaken for demons if you only saw them on the street, but what they are has nothing to do with appearance. No, these creatures have a rather unique ability to be whomever they want.

The long and short of their history
Though they claim to be as old as the Earth, the first few sightings of faceless only date back to around 6000 BC, though they claim that this is because until then they had remained in their own realm. But the real question surrounding this race isn't when, it's how. They really have very little in the way of history in any realm but their own. And even their, they're only credited war upon war and famine upon famine and so on and so forth until current times. One notable event, however, was when their current ruler took over by means of nearly destroying an entire continent. There's no real way to tell time in faceless terms because they don't keep track of it so well, but it must have been at least two-thousand years ago when the real war started. A mysterious faceless had taken control of several territories using a strange army that reeked of death. He destroyed many large cities until he came to the ultimate stronghold and a fierce battle broke loose. Putting it simply, he destroyed everything in his way and took hold of power. He killed the old ruler and took the throne to rule over all the faceless. Since then, there have been far fewer wars simply because he is so feared by many, yet some still go against him, rouges and assassins who've been cast from society.
Another notable event happened quite a bit more recently, within the past few hundred years. The faceless simply started disappearing without cause. No one knew why and it still remains a mystery, though it has been rumored that it had quite a bit to do with the human world.

It's a death right
That's all that it takes to become a faceless. Well, maybe it's not so simple as just dying... To become a faceless, there are rules that had been formulated as relating to many studied cases, though even the faceless don't know them all.
I You must die.
II You must not be older than ten years of age, or younger than one-hundred-eight years of age.
III You must commit suicide or be killed by someone you know.
IV You must know why you died.
V You will have no memories of your previous life once you become a faceless.

The aesthetics
They're so ranged in appearance that this part hardly matters. As soon as they are reborn as faceless, they simply choose a body at random from any living things around them. Again, there are rules to this.
I If a body is not selected within 47 hours of being born a faceless, your soul becomes lost.
II The body must be living, otherwise it will continue to rot as you use it.
III Staying out of a body for more than 24 hours after becoming a faceless will badly damage your soul but not kill you.
IV Staying out of a body for more than 47 hours will kill you.
V Dolls may be used in replacement for bodies so long as you can move them.
VI Jumping into more than three bodies within 47 hours will weaken your ability to enter new bodies.
VII Jumping into the body of another faceless may result in the two souls tearing apart the body and injuring eachother.
VIII You may stay in a body for as long as you like.
IX The body will not age, regardless of how long you inhabit it.

Abilities and such

The supernatural
Besides being able to move from one body to another, they can go from their world to any other world they find an entrance to. Other than this, powers range widely depending on the body.

The practical
Again, all dependent upon the body.

There's no place like home
The faceless realm is simply a separate plane of existence, entered through simply thinking of it and willing themselves there. Their world is called Alveus, so it's been called since anyone can remember. They feel more comfortable in their world, though it may be a bit more dangerous than other worlds. The only way someone of another race can enter Alveus is for a faceless to bring them there, to do so they must have physical contact with the faceless. Other races are not treated kindly in the faceless realm and the faceless themselves can hardly get along amongst themselves. No one knows quite how big their world is as there's still much uncharted, but what is inhabited is filled with advanced technology that would appear as something from ancient times if seen from afar, castles are rather popular.

Weaknesses

The death penalty
There are few ways to keep a faceless dead, as they can just jump from one dying or dead body to a living one. The one thing than can stop them is love. None have been able to describe exactly how it works, but it's been speculated that it's because of the nature to which they were born. Yes, simply falling in love will destroy them and there's no coming back after that. It's sometimes wondered if this is why so many faceless suddenly died at one time, like a great boom resonating through an empty field. The subject is rarely spoken of in the faceless realm, it would seem a sort of taboo.

Taking sides

The simple rule
Any alignment is just fine with them, depending on the personality of the individual.

Additional Info

Rumors
There are plenty of rumors circulating about the faceless, and probably many more to come. A few of these are that they're actually super vampires, obviously not true; that they have high ranks in the government, which is possible; and that they are actually demigods, which we all assume is also false. There are many more than just this, of course.

Gatherings
There are small groups and gatherings of faceless all over the place if you now where to look, though they're rather talented at being elusive.

Faceless for hire
Once being outcast from their own world they tend to hire themselves off as mercenaries to any paying customer.
